catching up...

sorry to the 3 people that probably read this blog for my lack of posting. there has been a lot going on in town related to cycling and cycling awareness and it has renewed my hope that we can somehow build a community in this town.

first there was the national bike to work day ride that was put together by the folks at commute smart. you know, those folks that will pay you to ride your bike to work. any way it was a lot of fun. there was about 30-40 people on the trip from road bikes to fixed gears to mountain bikes. i would say the only group not represented were the recumbents and the bmx or tiny bikers. the route however was pretty hilarious. it seemed that the only streets with bike lanes were the roughest roads in birmingham with pot holes and loose gravel. it was fun to have that many people out in the middle of rush hour downtown. if only critical mass was that big.

a few days later there was ride of silence. it was truly a surreal experience. once the ride started no one spoke in the 80 person bike ride through homewood. the truly amazing thing to me was the police escort. riding down lakeshore at a mid to slow pace with no traffic was mind blowing. there was also a pretty interesting mix of people at this ride which was fun. some of the lycras were dicks though, big surprise.

the critical mass at the end of may had 4 people. wow. but it was a fun group and it ended at rojo, which was a lot of fun. i can't imagine a critical mass in a city like atlanta when 200 people show up.

i will try to post more as more events pop up.
