well guys, looks like thursday night rides are now official! though i think "thunderin' thursdays" is kind of stupid. it was my idea. PLEASE suggest some other names, 'cause this shit ain't nascar and it shouldn't sound like it...
the votes were tallied, and mostly no one cared between tuesdays and thursdays, but thursdays came out in front at the end of the week.
there can be other days for rides if the group deems it to be so. in fact, we have discussed doing some slightly more distance-oriented sunday morning kinds of things that would end up with the devouring of pancakes in five points. suggestions have included doing some sort of rally ride with checkpoints at different folks' houses, as well as a fun little parking deck race.
i think it's important to establish sooner than later that if we're to do group rides, that we stick together during said rides. as the group expands, we will gain people who are extremely fast and have badass racing bikes, as well as people who are just into cruising and own 50-pound monsters. this will become more and more evident as we grow. part of embracing the solidarity is accommodating everyone's gear and riding styles.
part of the excitement of the whole deal for a lot of us is just sprinting through north side as a group... i am absolutely familiar with that mindset. but as we move forward, it will be tricky to balance this instinct with the greater need to develop a cohesive unit.
maybe the answer is (once we get a larger group together) developing a "speedy ride day" and a "chill ride day", or maybe doing different styles on different day. as it stands, this could be pretty easy to do between thursdays and sunday mornings. this way, all you gearheads who need that endorphine fix can get it without feeling like you're dissolving the group.
anyway, the first official brocycle ride was a lot of fun... attending were alan, paul, brett, havilah, and JP. i think alan took a photo or two and he'll probably post these in the near future. we did some cool parking deck rides, some parking lot slaloms, a little chatting, and generally cruised southside and northside. friendships are being forged here, and it's a beautiful thing. surely more of this will come. i'm stoked about it.
i've gotten some emails from kids outside our usual circles, so that's great! we're all looking forward to seeing some new faces at the next ride.
peace 'n' solidarity, brocyclists. share your thoughts.
